Abstract
This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Drill Method in improving freestyle swimming skills among students of SMP 123, Tangerang Regency, considering the low level of aquatic competence resulting from the use of conventional teaching methods that are less effective. Employing a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical design, the study involved 30 eighth-grade students as the main participants. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and visual documentation over eight training sessions. The results indicate that the structured implementation of the Drill Method, progressing from part practice (partial movement exercises) to whole practice (complete movement execution), significantly improved students’ movement mechanics, particularly in body streamlining, arm propulsion, and breathing coordination. Field findings further reveal that repetitive movements facilitated muscle memory formation and reduced students’ levels of aquatic anxiety. However, challenges related to boredom necessitated creative exercise variations by the teacher.Overall, this method proved effective not only in the psychomotor domain but also in the affective domain, fostering discipline and mental resilience among students. It is therefore recommended that physical education teachers integrate game-based elements into drill sessions to sustain student motivation.
